Star Trek director JJ Abrams disappointed and hurt by Star Trek: The Video Game
Abrams believes game "didn't help the movie and arguably hurt it"

    Star Trek: The Video Game

Hollywood director JJ Abrams was not in the least bit happy with Star Trek: The Video Game. He also believes it may actually have hurt Star Trek: Into Darkness, and doesn't care who knows it.

Speaking to Gamerhub at the DVD launch party for Star Trek: Into Darkness, Abrams expressed his frustration at the game in no uncertain terms.

"The last game, which was obviously a big disappointment to me, was something that we were actually involved in from the very beginning and then we sort of realised that it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted, so we dropped out and they continued to do it despite... y'know," said Abrams. I believe "y'know," in this instance, is polite-speak for "it sucked."

"To me the video game could have been something that actually really benefitted the series and was an exciting, fun game with great gameplay, and instead it was not and was something that I think, for me emotionally it hurt, 'cos we were working our asses off making the movie and then this game came out and it got, this isn't even my opinion, it got universally panned and I think that it was something without question that didn't help the movie and arguably hurt it."
Ouch. Thankfully, the experience hasn't put Abrams off the idea of film/game crossover projects. He's currently working on a couple of Portal and Half Life related projects with Valve, and knows exactly how movie/game collaborations are usually viewed.

"I think that, we all know is that anyone who loves video games and loves movies... very, very rarely does a movie based on a game, or a game based on a movie, really work," he said. "It usually ends up being something that everyone that goes to play feels like this was a marketing decision made by a room full of people that wanted to capitalise on a title. That's no way to make a game and no way to make a movie.

"The dream is - we're working with Valve right now on a couple of projects - is to say okay, despite its existence as a game, despite its existence as a movie, what makes this great? And starting from scratch, let's make this from the ground up great, regardless of what's come before.

"And that's me, whether it's a video game or a book or a movie or a song. Anything that is based on something else, it needs to exist on its own terms. And a lot of times these seem to exist as an ancillary product, in which case it will suck."

Amen, brother. If only JJ had thought to put Into Darkness' deleted Benedict Cumberbatch shower scene into the game somehow. I'd have bought it 1,000,000 times over - problem solved.

PS4 to hit 36 million sales, Xbox One to hit 30 million sales by 2018, say analysts
PlayStation 4 sales will surpass Xbox One by 2018, according to analysts Futuresource Consulting.

The firm expects both consoles to sell less than PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively, and predicts that PS4 sales will top 36 million unites worldwide by 2018, while Xbox One’s is expected to shift 30 million units by then.

In a report, the company explains, “We expect the Xbox One to sell well in the USA due to existing customer loyalty, repositioning as an integrated multimedia home hub will open up further market opportunities, though it is launching into a crowded marketplace, so gaining a strong foothold in this category will be challenging.

“The PS4 is likely to maintain its strong lead in its core territories of Japan and continental Europe. Due to its lower price point and positive PR within the gaming community, the PS4 will also reduce Xbox’s lead in the key Microsoft territories of the USA and UK when compared with previous generations.

“Due to the increased availability of high-quality alternative gaming platforms such as mobile devices, as well as expected propositions from tech powerhouses Apple and Google, we expect the installed bases of the Xbox One and PS4 to be 20 per cent lower than those of the previous generation after five years on the market.

“With increased market convergence and non-traditional competition, we could be looking at the last generation of gaming consoles as we know it.”

The report also predicts that despite a growing interest in digital sales, the physical retail market will jump $430 million in 2014, bringing the boxed market’s worth to £18.7 billion.

Dishonored dev hiring for next-gen project
Dishonored developer Arkane Studios is hiring for its first next-gen project, across a variety of technical roles.

In the blog, Arkane writes, “With Dishonored: Game of the Year Edition ready for release in October, Arkane Studios is ramping up on what comes next — next-gen development. While we can’t talk about what’s on the horizon, we wanted to let prospective game developers know that they’re already building up their team for the next project.

The team is now hiring at its Austin site, specifically two roles. They are Lead Tech Programmer and Tools Programmer, along with a list of art-led positions.

The team is also hiring for its Lyon-based studio. Get the full position list here.

So, is this Disnohored 2 or Prey 2 as rumours suggests?

Let us know what you think below.

Power struggle: the real differences between PS4 and Xbox One performance

PlayStation 4 is currently around 50 per cent faster than its rival Xbox One. Multiple high-level game development sources have described the difference in performance between the consoles as “significant” and “obvious.”

Our contacts have told us that memory reads on PS4 are 40-50 per cent quicker than Xbox One, and its ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is around 50 per cent faster. One basic example we were given suggested that without optimisation for either console, a platform-agnostic development build can run at around 30FPS in 1920×1080 on PS4, but it’ll run at “20-something” FPS in 1600×900 on Xbox One. “Xbox One is weaker and it’s a pain to use its ESRAM,” concluded one developer.

Microsoft is aware of the problem and, having recently upped the clock speed of Xbox One, is working hard to close the gap on PS4, though one developer we spoke to downplayed the move. “The clock speed update is not significant, it does not change things that much,” he said. “Of course, something is better than nothing.”

Even this close to launch, “the hardware isn’t locked,” said another source. Sony and Microsoft are each still working on the graphics drivers for each console, and Xbox One is lagging behind in this regard – Microsoft “has been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them,” said one source. Another described Xbox One’s graphics drivers less charitably as “horrible”. Both consoles’ graphics drivers will continue to improve right up to – and beyond – launch, which will even up the difference in performance a little.

Xbox One does, however, boast superior performance to PS4 in other ways. “Let’s say you are using procedural generation or raytracing via parametric surfaces – that is, using a lot of memory writes and not much texturing or ALU – Xbox One will be likely be faster,” said one developer.

Both platform holders are, of course, encouraging developers to take advantage of each console’s unique features (the DualShock 4’s touch pad and Kinect, for example) but there’s little enthusiasm for either among the developers we spoke to.*“They really want us to make use of platform specific stuff to give their version a leg up over the other,” said one source. “But unless there’s a good design reason or incentive we rarely do.”

Indeed, despite that gulf in speed, the differences between cross platform launch window games will be negligible; with tight deadlines to meet, it’s more expedient for developers to deliberately create near-identical versions.

“The poor [graphics] drivers have made it difficult to push either of them, and the developers aren’t familiar with the hardware yet,“ said one source. Another stated that we’ll begin to see far greater use of each platform’s unique features once we’re past the first wave of releases, when developers have more time and experience with each console’s quirks.

One source even suggested that enforcing parity across consoles could become a political issue between platform holders, developers and publishers. They said that it could damage perceptions of a cross platform title, not to mention Xbox One, if the PS4 version shipped with an obviously superior resolution and framerate; better to “castrate” the PS4 version and release near-identical games to avoid ruffling any feathers.

This claim was later countered by a contact at a different studio. “It would be totally fine for us to make one version prettier without any political difficulties but it usually doesn’t make financial sense,” they said, “unless it’s a very simple tweak.”

The difference between cross platform launch window games will be small, and improved graphics drivers plus the power of the cloud might yet tip the balance in Xbox One’s favour. Nonetheless, at launch, PS4 will be the more capable console.
