Microsoft explains how Xbox One importing could work
Needs to accept the same currency as a supported country.

Yesterday Microsoft made the disappointing announcement that the Xbox One would be delayed in eight countries. Given that the console is region-free and no longer requires an internet connection, this would suggest that it could be imported from neighboring countries. We've asked Microsoft about this and it explained that while the platform and all of its games are region-free, it will still require online payments in a supported type of currency.

"When the console launches this November, we will support Xbox One in 13 markets. Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets. In addition, Xbox One games are not region locked. Any Xbox One game purchased at retail can be used in any country on any Xbox One," said Microsoft in a statement.

"That said, there needs to be a valid payment method corresponding to a supported launch country in order for any transactions to occur over Xbox Live, and some content may not be accessible outside launch markets due to geographic content restrictions imposed by content right holders."

It's not a perfect workaround then, but it's better than nothing. Even without convenient access to the Xbox Live marketplace, players in countries affected by the delay will still be able to enjoy disc-based retail games to tide them over until their currency is supported.

Tropico 5 coming to Xbox 360, PC, Mac and Linux next year

Tropico 5, the next installment in the island management Tropico series, will launch next year, publisher Kalypso Media announced today.

Tropico 5 will be available on Xbox 360, Windows PC, Mac and Linux systems. The game is currently in development with Bulgaria-based Haemimont Studios, the company behind Tropico 3 and 4 as well as the recently-released turn-based tactical simulation game Omerta — City of Gangsters.

Players will again become El Presidente, ruling the island of Tropico and guiding it through its colonial times and into the future. Players must take care of their people while fending off rival factions and protecting their legacy through each era's struggles — including both World Wars, the Great Depression and the Cold War.

The game's artwork has been given a complete overhaul, and it will introduce a handful of new features, including the Dynasty system. With this system, each member of players' extended island family can be brought into leadership positions, and can earn experience points and skills in their offices.

Tropico 5 will also feature competitive and cooperative multiplayer — for the first time in the series — for up to four players.

Check out the teaser trailer above for a first look at Tropico 5.

GTA Online is a 'persistent online world,' launches Oct. 1

Grand Theft Auto 5 publisher Rockstar Games hadn't said anything about Grand Theft Auto Online until now, except for providing a brief clip of multiplayer footage at the end of the game's most recent trailer, but the company revealed the first details about Grand Theft Auto Online with a new trailer today.

Grand Theft Auto Online will be available on Oct. 1, a couple of weeks after Grand Theft Auto 5 comes out, and access to it will be free to owners of the game. According to Rockstar, it is a persistent online world that will "continue to expand and evolve after its launch." Rockstar will update GTA Online with its own content, but it will also allow for user-created content such as races and deathmatches that players can share with others. The mode will support as many as 16 players.

Players will have the ability to customize their character, as in the online component of Red Dead Redemption, and rank up by doing things like buying customized cars, purchasing property and going on missions by themselves or with friends. And as in Red Dead Redemption, users will also be able to partake in unstructured play, messing around in the open world of Los Santos. That world supports the same variety of experiences that the Grand Theft Auto 5 campaign does, whether by land, air or sea.

GTA ONLINE SUPPORTS USER-CREATED DEATHMATCHES AND RACES

Missions include cooperative heists and burglaries, as well as more traditional choices like team deathmatch. Players can also opt for less violent pursuits, like a round of golf. Completing jobs will earn players money and reputation, which will allow them to rise in the GTA Online ranks and acquire property. The missions include cutscenes in which players will be introduced to new characters; there's no word yet on whether the campaign's three protagonists — Michael, Franklin and Trevor — will appear in GTA Online.

It's unclear at this point if GTA Online will be a standalone game, or if players will have to buy Grand Theft Auto 5 in order to play it. We've reached out to Rockstar for more information, and will update this article with any details we receive.

Grand Theft Auto 4, which launched in April 2008, was the first entry in the open-world franchise with an online multiplayer component. Up to 16 people (32 in the Windows PC version) could play in a variety of modes, including standard fare such as team deathmatch racing and more crime-focused options like contract kills and car theft.

Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released Sept. 17 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For details on its single-player campaign, check out our preview from May and see the most recent screenshots here.

UNDERTAKE CO-OP HEISTS AND ROBBERIES

Update: When GTA Online launches on Oct. 1, Grand Theft Auto 5 players will access it through the character switching wheel in the game's bottom right corner, reports CVG. The fourth part of the wheel will be filled in with a user's multiplayer avatar. And according to Leslie Benzies, president of developer Rockstar North, the studio is purposefully delaying the GTA Online launch by two weeks.

"We want to give people an opportunity to actually get their heads around what's happened, because even single-player is a big advancement from the old games," said Benzies to CVG. "There's a lot of new things to learn."

Players may be required to enter a code of some kind in order to access GTA Online, and there may be a "tiny download" as well. Benzies also explained that the world of GTA Online is set "slightly before" the events of the Grand Theft Auto 5 campaign, so the single-player and multiplayer components will share characters who will introduce players to GTA Online. However, GTA Online's statistical progression will remain separate from the campaign.

GTA Online will offer a "passive" mode for players who want to get acquainted with the game without being killed as soon as they spawn into Los Santos — in the passive mode, they won't be able to shoot each other. That's a big deal in the standard GTA Online mode, because once a player is killed, their money falls onto the ground and others can simply pick it up. So it's important to visit the bank on a regular basis and deposit your new earnings.

DEPOSIT YOUR EARNINGS REGULARLY, LEST THEY GET STOLEN

Update 2: "We don't have any plans to sell GTA Online separately," a Rockstar Games representative told Polygon over email. The rep also clarified that GTA Online will not require "a code, online pass, or anything like that.

"When [Grand Theft Auto 5] launches there will be a countdown clock in the fourth slice of the character selection wheel. The countdown will expire on Oct. 1, unlocking GTA Online via a title update."

ATTENZIONE per chi ha intenzione di risparmiare acquistandola in $ in USA!

Xbox One games aren't region-locked, Microsoft confirms, so why wait till 2014?
"Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets."

Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One games are region-free, which is apparently news, though I could swear I read it/wrote about it a few weeks ago. This isn't a passive-aggressive swipe at fellow journos - I'm probably just misremembering. Anyway, shut up Edwin and tell us about Xbox One game region-locking.

Microsoft announced the news to Eurogamer last night, in what's clearly an attempt to appease those who will no longer be buying an Xbox One this year, after the company pushed back release in eight previously announced launch regions.

"When the console launches this November, we will support Xbox One in 13 markets," it reads. "Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets. In addition, Xbox One games are not region locked. Any Xbox One game purchased at retail can be used in any country on any Xbox One.

"That said," it cautions, "there needs to be a valid payment method corresponding to a supported launch country in order for any transactions to occur over Xbox Live, and some content may not be accessible outside launch markets due to geographic content restrictions imposed by content right holders."
People who live in the regions concerned who've pre-ordered already might want to hold off importing nonetheless - Microsoft will send a free pack-in game to pre-ordering Xbox One buyers as compensation for the delay.

Microsoft's Albert Penello followed up with a quick clarification on NeoGAF, warning players to watch out for incompatible power supplies, and that pre-paid cards may be "geo-restricted based on licensing (e.g. Netflix works only in supported countries)."

The game that wasn't Project Gotham Racing 5
Introducing 2K Drive, the game that Lucid believes is some of the former Bizarre staff's best work.

Lucid Games isn't making Project Gotham Racing 5. You've had a couple of months to let that sink in, and to do with the information what you will, whether that be mourning or just seeking solace in Forza 5's bright, urban spaces that suggest Turn 10's muscling in on the patch left absent since Bizarre Creation's demise. The game that is being created by a group of veterans from the Liverpool studio that brought us one of the best arcade racers should be of interest, though - according to Lucid, its new game 2K Drive could be some of the best work in the careers of its illustrious staff.

"Racing games are about the depth of the handling system," says Pete Wallace, one of Lucid's eight founder members and a man with no small experience of the genre. "They need to be accessible, but there needs to be depth - and if you haven't got that depth I kind of fall out of love with it. That's the hardest thing to solve in a racing game. We've definitely solved it in 2K Drive."

"The physics system and the dynamics are there," says creative director Craig Howard of the relationship between 2K Drive and the PGR series, "and that's the process we used to work on with the pad. It's just that we're using a tablet now, but there are certain similarities that people will pick up on from Project Gotham."

Off-road driving is a discipline new to the team, and part of 2K Drive's varied make-up.
2K Drive, as you may already know, is a driving game destined for tablets and phones, which has been enough to send many fans of the PGR series who had been feverishly anticipating Lucid's next game packing. You can't blame them, really - driving games on iOS haven't shone so brightly, and even the most successful examples such as Real Racing 3 are held back by binary handling and mechanics muddied and dictated by business models. It's hard to say just yet if 2K Drive's going to be guilty of those very things, but Lucid is at least making the right noises.

2K Drive isn't a free-to-play game - instead it's a premium priced app. Exactly how much of a premium that'll be isn't clear just yet, and there will be the option to spend more once you've bought the entire game, but Lucid insists it's employing a more sympathetic model than its competitors. "There are microtransactions in there, but the point is they're not needed in the game," assures Howard. "If some people want to get to point X in the game quicker, you can pay to get there - but the game's not built around that, and the weighting's not around that. It plays like a premium game, you can grind and you can unlock and it's all fair - there's not a massive wall that will stop you progressing."

Beyond the handling model - which is hard to assess unless you're in one of the areas where 2K Drive enjoyed a soft launch a couple of months back - there's a grand concept to Lucid's game. It's a magazine style collection of all that's new and exciting in the world of cars, where articles and videos pulled in from real-life partners can link into new events in the game. Read a piece about the Ford Raptor, for example, and you'll potentially be seconds away from pounding a virtual model around one of 2K Drive's off-road tracks.

"We want it to be a hub for all car enthusiasts," says Howard. "The game brings in the latest news from the car world, and also there are lots of new events to play, and they're more varied than we'd do in a Gotham game. There are now off-road cars and off-road tracks, and there are lots of different objectives. It's a magazine format, and again that fits into this mobile idea of you coming in and playing quite a different experience on the bus or at home on your iPad."

2K Drive's a serious proposition, then, and it's been a focus of the studio since shortly after it first emerged from the ashes of Bizarre early in 2011. Work began on 2K Drive later that year, ensuring it's had a longer lead time than most mobile games. "It was the first game we signed, so it's been about for quite a while," says Wallace. "Basically 2K helped us build the studio, they funded the project and that allowed us to grow and staff up on 2K Drive. I've been with the guys for a while developing 2K Drive, and there's a lot of scope in there - when you work with the publisher that partnership makes it a lot easier to do than if you were self-funded."

Lucid's serious about its handling model: 'The drifting in this game is the best drifting in any game I've played... ever,' says Howard.
The calamity of Activision's handling of Bizarre Creations hasn't dimmed the team's approach to publishers, then, though it's given it a taste for smaller, more experimental games. The past couple of years have seen Lucid step away from its comfort zone with the likes of Jacob Jones, an adventure game for Vita and iOS. "I think initially most of us had worked on big franchises it was nice to start with a blank canvas, to think about new concepts," says Wallace. "We came up with the first new concepts to start off which we developed to various degrees, but they were all quite different. Obviously we're about driving or racing, but these were completely different, different platforms and even different technology - we looked at cloud computing, iOS, PC. It was really interesting and liberating."

2K Drive's a return to an area more familiar to Lucid's staff, but it's still in territory that's new to developer and publisher alike. 2K's only just beginning to experiment with mobile gaming, and the processes unique to the platforms are new to Lucid too. "It's a very ambitious iOS game," says Wallace. "It's smaller than console games, but it's actually a very complex game - probably the most complex I've ever worked on, because it involves a lot of server side communication."

Whether that complexity is enough for fans who found out Lucid was working on a racing game then put two and two together to get PGR5 is another matter, but the developer's at least confident those that try its new project will find something worthwhile here. "I think they'll enjoy playing it," says Howard. "We've not made PGR5, but I think 2K Drive is still going to be exciting for a lot of players."

Xbox One games will not be region locked

Games launched on the new Xbox One system will not be restricted through region locking, Microsoft told Eurogamer following the recent announcement that the console's release is delayed in eight countries across Europe.

This provides a workaround for those in countries where the console is delayed.

The delay of Xbox One in eight markets is the result of implementing voice support for a number of languages into the dashboard, Microsoft director of marketing Albert Penello confirmed in a statement on NeoGAF.

"This was simply a software issue in terms of getting local language and voice support in the dash. It's pretty straightforward, but disappointing I know for people who are missing launch."
