Microsoft Approaches 10 Million Xboxes Sold

    Microsoft has sold just over 9.4 million Xbox consoles worldwide, according to its quarterly financial statement released today. For comparison, Sony has shipped (if not sold) 51.2 million units of PlayStation 2 hardware as of the end of March, while Nintendo is roughly even with Microsoft, having racked up an equal installed base of 9.4 million Gamecube consoles sold as of this May.

    Microsoft projects that the Xbox installed base to grow to between 14.5 and 16 million consoles by the end of its next fiscal year, the end of June 2004. In the meantime, continued growth of the Xbox Live service is also expected, with more than 500,000 subscribers worldwide to date.
