Redditor crunches numbers, estimates bandwidth needed for cloud physics
    Maths guys, m a t h s. You'll believe maths right?!
Thu 12 Jun 2014 by Jez
A crazy mathematician has taken to reddit to post his estimation for the amount of bandwidth Microsoft's //build cloud destruction demo would take.

For a game to utilize dynamic destruction on the scale teased in the CGI trailer and in the //build demo, many critics have pointed to the fact that global internet speeds are still seriously lacking. The US notoriously has awful internet provision, lack of competition drives up prices whilst keeping speeds at a snails pace. Comcast and Verizon are embroiled in a battle to restrict bandwidth even further, by defeating net neutrality laws and installing fast lanes to extort companies who can afford it.

It's with this back ground in mind that the internet largely shrugged its shoulders at Microsoft's cloud processing PR speak. Surely most people wouldn't have the internet speeds required to implement these physics -- and even then, what happens when you have no internet? and so on.

So just how much bandwidth did the //build demo utilize?

    391kbps

That's right. Less than 1 mb/s broadband would be required to process what was seen in the //build server based physics demo, according to savvy reddit user /u/JonnyLH. He offers a large explanation of his findings, and has been supported by other nerdy smart redditors.

Obviously on Microsoft's end, the bandwidth required could be astronomical. The guys at Redmond have been betting big on cloud data, in every level of the company. They've set up collosal data centres all over the world to facilitate Office 365 and Windows Azure, they're poised to take the web server crown from Apache as well.

Xbox Live is renowned for reliability and speed (generally), and if there's any company that can provide the bandwidth clout to facilitate these physics it's Microsoft.

I can't verify the accuracy of these maths because I'm dumb, but they're in-line with comments previously made by Microsoft on bandwidth usage for these scenarios. They don't even take into account the magical algorithms and tricks Microsoft will utilize to bring this destruction to our consoles.

It's an exciting notion that we could soon be playing Red Faction Guerrilla on steroids, but one that still remains unproven in the minds of the cynical core gamer, who are all too used to big companies delivering empty promises. What do you think?

Rumor: Cortana to make its way to Xbox One, Windows 8.1 or 9; will launch in India in the coming monthsWritten by Hammad Saleem on June 12, 2014, at 10:53AM
    [IMG]
Cortana is one of the most interesting feature of Windows Phone 8.1. However, it's limited to US for now, with a word that it will make its way to the UK and China in the coming months -- if you're running the developer preview, you can tweak the region settings to use it now.
Rumors suggest UK is next in the list, and it may land sooner than we expect -- possibly by the end of this month. However, what about other major markets like India? Well, according to a new rumor, Microsoft is working on it, and it will be available very soon.
Now, you must be wondering about the source of information? Well, it comes from Talderon, a WPCentral forum member who claims to be a Microsoft employee -- although there's no way to prove his authenticity, but the information he shared is interesting. When asked if it will make its way to India, he said, "India is still being worked on, but it will be sooner than later. No guess on a date yet." Let's entertain what he has to say.
As far as its availability on other platforms is concerned, Talderon said it will make its way to Xbox One and Windows, but there's no word about the availability. He claims Cortana will be available for Windows 8.1 or higher, which coincides with recent rumors of Cortana being a part of Windows 9. He also claims he's testing Cortana on his Xbox One while playing Halo.
Lastly, he also provided a list of changes for Cortana, which are also reported by other users as well, including enhanced sports and news cards, interest improvements, improved flight tracking, Jen Taylor voice smoothing making it less robotic, and lots of bug fixes.
Let's just take this as a rumor, and wait for Microsoft's official statement about it. However, the information he shared looks interesting and reasonable. There's a big thread on WPCentral forums talking about this, so you may want to give it a read.

Will Fallout 4 Feature An Always Online DRM And Micro-transactions?
This week we speculate unexpected features that may makes its way to Fallout 4.
    15th, Jun. 2014

Another E3 has come and gone by but Bethesda have not revealed any new information about the next entry in the Fallout franchise. It seems that it will be that way for sometime to come but at least they have been cryptically hinting it via trademark registrations and job listings. Despite the lack of any new details, we will keep speculating on what what Bethesda could add into Fallout 4.
This week we will discuss possible features that could be added into the Fallout 4. Could Bethesda add an always online requirement? With a lot of modern games going online only [example Destiny], we might very well see Fallout 4 bringing the single player and multiplayer components as a single package. This could help Bethesda to add new patches and features on the fly. But again, multiplayer in a Fallout world seems tacked on and unnecessary.
Another feature that is the rage these days are micro-transactions. In my opinion, micro-transactions are not an evil practice unless they are done right. Very few developers get it right these days but Bethesda for one won’t make their fan base angry by adding in-game transactions that will feel tacked on.
What are your thoughts on this and what other features could Bethesda add into Fallout 4? Let us know in the comments section below.
This article is part of our weekly series on Bethesda’s next big entry into the world of Fallout. Through this series we take a look at the possible new features that Bethesda can add into Fallout 4, based on what they implemented in the previous entries and player feedback.

Halo 5 Guardians Multiplayer To Lean More Towards eSports
Game director Frank O’Connor explains why they might take the eSports approach for Halo 5 Guardians.
    15th, Jun. 2014

The next entry into the long running Halo franchise, Halo 5: Guardians will have a few of its multiplayer elements tweaked. Instead of being reward driven, 343 Industries will make the multiplayer lean more towards eSports. The game’s director Frank O’Connor revealed this bit of information during a Giant Bomb E3 stream.
“The funny thing is we’ve seen first person shooters get more and more complex, and more and more sort of reward driven and stuff. There has been kind of a backlash about it,”Frank explained. He then talks about how an eSports approach can resolve this issue. “I think it’s a seesaw, and I think that it is tipping back towards the – and eSports is certainly driving a lot of that – is going for things that are really truly competitive rather than just sort of reward driven.”
However he thinks that they will keep the rewarding aspect in the single player campaign. “But I think you can have your cake and eat it, you can have both of those sets of experiences in a game. And sort of reward people in the campaign and make sure that your multiplayer is something pure.”
What are your thoughts on Frank’s comments and how do you think it will shape Halo 5 Guardians? Let us know in the comments section below.

Halo 5: Guardians – New Details On Multiplayer, Abilities And More
You’ll be performing pretty much the same things as before while playing as a Spartan.
    15th, Jun. 2014

After the reveal trailer for Halo 5: Guardians’ multiplayer, there were many questions asked about the so-called “next generation arena multiplayer” gameplay it would. 343 Industries design director Bradford Welch was actually questioned about the same on Twitter. Sadly, his answers were fairly typical about what players could expect.
“Arena means what you’d expect. Competitive focus, level playing field, map control. Spartan abilities are player mechanics not loadout AAs.”
Welch also made sure to mention that the abilities in question were “things that every player can do inherently with their Spartan.” No fall damage? Psh, everyone’s got that.
Regardless, Halo 5: Guardians will be doing tons of new things with its multiplayer. We already know that 343 Industries is developing new multiplayer modes for the game and we got our first glimpse of the new Spartans during E3. Halo 5: Guardians will be out in 2015, while the multiplayer beta will be included with Halo: The Master Chief Collection (releasing on November 11th for Xbox One).
