Microsoft veterans design new 64-bit game engine for PC, PS4 and Xbox One

Veterans of studios Firaxis and Microsoft have formed Oxide Games, a new independent company dedicated to making new next-gen 3D engines, including a new 64-bit multicore game engine for Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 hardware.

Called Nitrous, this new engine supports Simultaneous Work and Rendering Model, a feature that automatically renders from the most available CPU core, allowing for a vastly larger number of high-fidelity 3D objects.

"In most modern games, players may see a handful of unique, high-fidelity 3D models on the screen at the same time," said Oxide ames co-founder Tim Kipp in a prepared statement. "That's because current 3D engines are 32-bit and rely on a ‘main thread' to talk to the GPU. Nitrous, by contrast, was designed from scratch to be a 64-bit, multicore engine. Nitrous will render epic numbers of units and light sources on a screen at any given time."

A number of developers have already committed to using Nitrous in their upcoming titles. This includes developer and publisher Stardock Entertainment, known best for strategy PC titles Sins of a Solar Empire, Galactic Civilizations and Fallen Enchantress, provided the seed capital for Oxide Games as part of the Stardock Strategic Investment Fund.

The Xbox One May Have VR In It’s Long-Term Plan


In a recent interview with Edge-Online, Microsoft corporate VP Phil Harrison didn’t rule out the possibility of VR coming to the Xbox One. To be more specific, he hinted at it. When asked if Microsoft was looking into AR/VR technology for the Xbox One, Harrison replied,

We wouldn’t make any specific announcements here but we’ve put USB 3.0 ports on Xbox One for a reason, which is that we want high bandwidth communication with other accessory or companion devices.

A follow-up question asked if Microsoft is looking to release that kind (VR/AR) of hardware itself and Harrison answered, “I’m not going to speculate but we definitely designed the platform to extend over time” The long-term plan at Microsoft in regards to Xbox One was to produce a future-proof console, and VR/AR may play an enormous role in the future of gaming. It’s good to see that Microsoft isn’t completely close-minded to the issue thinking that its Kinect device is the end-all-be-all.

There were rumors that Sony was to reveal an VR headset at TGS 2013, but that didn’t pan out. For now this little tease will have to go in the speculation column, but it sounds like there’s something happening in the R&D department at Microsoft in regards to AR/VR.

Corporate VP Phil Harrison says Microsoft is cooking up new features for next-gen console to arrive after release next month.

Microsoft has "really exciting things" planned for the Xbox One after its launch next month, corporate vice president Phil Harrison told Edge in a new interview.

Despite policy reversals this summer, Harrison said Microsoft's "fundamental vision" for a digital-based future remains in place, though the company has "reordered priorities a little bit."

"We have a very significant engineering team--some of the smartest people I've ever worked with--who are very focused on launch right now," Harrison said. "But as soon as we get past launch then there are some really exciting things that are on the way."

Microsoft product planning director Albert Penello told GameSpot this summer that the Xbox One will allow for loaning and trading of downloaded games sometime after launch.

"I think we need to do that. That has to be part of the experience," Penello said.

He also teased at the time that backward compatibility through streaming may be offered on the Xbox One some day and that the Family Sharing plan will return.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Microsoft is developing wearable technology similar to Google Glass, backing up a report from last summer. In the Egde interview today, Harrison was asked outright if Microsoft is working on virtual reality or augmented reality technology.

Sempre uno schifo di gioco è. Anche crysis 2 era graficamente impeccabile però faceva pietà lo stesso. Chissene della grafica se poi tutto il resto è da buttare. Uno che ha partecipato a un progetto pressoché fallimentare che mi viene a giudicare il lavoro degli altri dovrebbe per lo meno guardare in casa propria prima di proferire verbo. E poi dire che Killzone e ryse non fanno effetto a livello tecnico è essere idioti imho.
