Zelda-themed Wii U hardware appears in The Wind Waker HD 'Hero Mode' clip

A black Wii U GamePad with The Legend of Zelda styling appeared in a trailer highlighting the Hero Mode in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD that was briefly posted (then pulled) by Nintendo earlier today. A mirror of the video, via NeoGAF, was later rehosted on YouTube.

The apparent leak of that Zelda-themed Wii U comes after Destructoid reported earlier this week that a 32 GB Wii U bundle that includes a copy of The Wind Waker HD would be coming to retail for $349.99. The HD remake is expected to come to Wii U this October in North America and Europe.

The Wind Waker HD's special edition Wii U hardware appears to match up aesthetically with another piece of recent Zelda hardware, the Legend of Zelda 25th anniversary Nintendo 3DS bundle released last in 2012.

When contacted for confirmation, Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of Corporate Communications, told Polygon, "We have nothing to announce at this time."

Ubisoft 'aiming for locked 30FPS' with PS4 & Xbox One The Crew

60FPS unrealistic given the size of the world, dev claims.

Ivory Tower and Ubisoft Reflections are "aiming for 30 frames per second locked" with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of next year's open-world racer The Crew, creative director Julian Gerighty has told VideoGamer.com, stating that a higher frame rate would be unrealistic given the size of the world.

"We've never been at 60 frames per second," Gerighty told us during a gameplay presentation this morning. "We've always been aiming for 30 frames per second locked. Today, unfortunately certain PCs have been overheating, so we're having frame rate drops. It's a hardware issue, not a software issue.

"60 frames per second is, of course, what we would all like to obtain," he continued, "but it's such a big world, and with all the online features running, it's just not realistic to obtain that. 30 [frames] locked is really, really good and exactly what we've been focussed on."

Despite being co-developed by Driver: San Francisco studio Ubisoft Reflections, development on The Crew is being led by French studio Ivory Tower, comprised of ex-Eden Games developers, which has created a proprietary engine for the next-gen racer.

"In fact, no," Gerighty replied, when asked whether The Crew was running on a modified version of Driver: San Francisco's engine. "It has the DNA of both Test Drive Unlimited, which was the world of Hawaii [and] seamless online, because it was conceived by Ivory Tower in France who are ex-Eden Games [developers]. But... this is a multi-studio project, so when Ubisoft asked Ivory Tower who [they wanted to] work with within Ubisoft, there is no better team - maybe in the world - for an action driving game, than working with Ubisoft Reflections. So Ubisoft Reflections are working hand-in-hand with Ivory Tower.

    The Crew screenshot
"The tech behind it is proprietary to Ivory Tower. This is something that is completely brilliant in terms of tools that allows us to build a very varied, very spectacular, beautiful world very easily... So it's really more, in terms of technical side of things, Ivory Tower."

The Crew's open world is set across a map of North America, with Ivory Tower aiming to include "around 15" cities. But don't expect a 1:1 recreation of the US, Gerighty warns.

"It's obviously not 1:1. If you've ever had a road trip even from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, it's four or five hours away. We're still in the business of entertainment, so what we've done is we've done a condensed version of everything. Running from San Francisco to New York will last about an hour."

Yesterday, Dead Rising 3 developer Capcom Vancouver told VideoGamer.com that it was "targeting 30 frames a second" and working with Microsoft to help improve the game's performance.

PS4 racer DriveClub, meanwhile, still runs at 30FPS despite development team Evolution targeting a 60FPS frame rate in time for launch.

The Crew launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC early next year.

World of Tanks guarda a Xbox One

Killer Instinct's next fighter is a mysterious spider woman

The next fighter to be revealed for Killer Instinct for Xbox One appears to be a completely new character with spider-like powers, but details on her name or whether she's a radical redesign of a previous character haven't been revealed.

The new character, teased at the end of a video posted (then pulled) by GameTrailers and spotted by EventHubs, apparently has the ability to throw spider webs to attack and ensnare opponents. She's also outfitted with a pair of blades on the back of each hand and a another set of blades running down her forearms. The character is not immediately recognizable as an interpretation of past Killer Instinct fighters.

In a recent livestream for the game, Microsoft creative director Adam Isgreen said, "You will not see the next character coming in terms of who they may be." He later teased that the next character to be revealed will "fit really well into the KI lore and it's a character that I think everyone will get a real kick out of."

Her play style, Killer Instinct producer Torin Rettig said, will be "really different" and "may provide something that's been missing" in the currently revealed roster. Officially, the Xbox One launch game's roster so far includes Jago, Sabrewulf, Glacius and Chief Thunder.

Killer Instinct is being released for free, but players will have to pay to unlock most of the game's characters.

Android games now out-selling games for Sony and Nintendo handhelds

IDC and App Annie's study suggests that iOS and Android combined now generate four times the revenues of dedicated gaming handhelds

Google's Android logo has been ubiquitous at Mobile World Congress 2012. Photo: Stuart Dredge
One of the regular criticisms of Android in general (and its Google Play app store in particular) is that people don't spend money on apps there.

A new report by research firm IDC and analytics company App Annie undermines that with its claim that Google Play generated more spending on games in the second quarter of this year than Nintendo and Sony's gaming handhelds combined.

The report – Worldwide Portable Game Consumer Spending – also claims that game spending on iOS and Android combined was four times the amount spent on games for 3DS, DS/DSi, PS Vita and PSP games during the three-month period.

Note: these figures only cover the Google Play store for Android, so do not include games sold through Amazon's Appstore or the growing number of independent Android app stores in countries like China.

A big surprise? Not if you've been following the financial results of games publishers like Electronic Arts. In the same quarter, EA sold $12m of games for Sony handhelds and $9m for Nintendo handhelds – $21m combined, versus $113m from mobile phones and tablets.

IDC and App Annie's report notes that games accounted for more than 30% of app downloads and more than 70% of app revenues on iOS' App Store and Android's Google Play in the second quarter, and adds that the latter's games revenues continue to be dominated by sales in Japan and South Korea.

Data from elsewhere indicates that Google Play is growing fast. Another analytics firm, Distimo, estimated recently that Google Play app revenues had grown 67% in the six months between February and June 2013, compared to 15% for iOS app revenues.

An earlier report by App Annie claimed that in the second quarter of 2013, Google Play generated 10% more app downloads than the App Store, but that Apple's store made 2.3 times the revenues than Google's.

Yet another analytics firm, Flurry – there is something of a battle among these companies to see who can release the most useful data – said this month that it is tracking 576m active Android smartphones and tablets, and 397m active iOS devices.

For all the criticisms of Android's high levels of piracy and a perceived reluctance to pay for games by its users, sheer scale is turning Google's OS into a significant handheld gaming platform.

Some companies are already making dedicated games devices running Android, including handhelds like the Nvidia Shield and micro-consoles that connect to televisions like Ouya, GameStick, GamePop and Mad Catz's Project M.O.J.O.

Google has also been tipped to launch its own-brand games console running Android, with the Wall Street Journal reporting earlier this year that such a device is being developed in the expectation that Apple has similar ambitions for TV-based gaming.

Even combined, however, Android and iOS are still some way from challenging console game sales. Research firm Newzoo has predicted that smartphones and tablet games will generate $12.3bn of revenues in 2013, versus $30.6bn for consoles – although the latter figure includes handhelds.
