Microsoft Recruiting Players to Hunt Xbox Trolls

A common complaint of online gaming in its present form is the prevalence of toxic players who make the experience unnecessarily miserable for others with their behavior. Often, such people are found on Xbox Live, and Microsoft MSFT +0.69% is rolling out a pair of new initiatives to help hunt down their trolls.

The first is Enforcement United, where Xbox players can sign up to serve justice to players who may be making the community a worse place. The second is Xbox Community Level, a program where players can level up and earn rewards by being a positive member of the Xbox Live collective, like volunteering for Enforcement United.

“We’ve heard your feedback that you want ways to positively shape your Xbox Live experience, and we feel this is a great way for you to get involved,” Xbox Live policy and enforcement director Glenn Kaleta wrote in an Xbox.com blog.

At first, players will only be judging the appropriateness of other players’ Gamertags, looking for potentially bad ones that the built in filters didn’t catch. Despite present restrictions, attention-seeking players always seem to find a way to use numbers and wonky letters to spell out offensive identifiers for themselves.

There will be a system of checks and balances in place so players aren’t just arbitrarily punished, though I expect there will be some level of false positives as always tends to happen with “tribunal” style community judgment systems like this one. That said, I think it’s a good idea and could help, at least to some degree, to make gaming on Xbox Live more livable. Enforcement United is in its beta phase with this Gamertag analysis program, but there’s no reason to think it couldn’t extend to other aspects of someone’s profile or online habits as well.

A community like Xbox Live is simply too big to be policed by Microsoft employees alone, and this is a good way to draw from the positive members of the community to help make the space a better place. Obviously this won’t solve every issue, but I don’t think it can hurt either.

Right now, only Xbox Live Ambassadors are eligible to serve in the Enforcement United beta. Ambassadors help out with customer service issues players may have on the behalf of Microsoft, and can rank up their new Xbox Community Level by doing so. You can sign up to join here if you like.

]Nintendo's Nuclear Option: Free Games for All

Rumor has it Nintendo may roll out its huge backlist of games for users to download for free. Would it be a good move?
Everyone in the gaming industry is abuzz over the slow uptake and poor sales of the Nintendo Wii U$59.99 at Kmart, prompted by a slow rollout and the need for a huge download to even work.
Once installed and running though, it's an excellent networked system with an array of games, old and new, that highlight the compatibility of the machine with the previous Wii.
The Wii U itself is unusual because it comes with a gamepad big enough to play all the games without a home TV and can run in parallel with a TV set broadcasting a cable channel. When the TV output of the Wii U is enabled, the gamepad acts as an auxiliary input device. A complicated lash-up may be daunting. All I know is kids and adults like the thing once they use it. I personally think it is remarkable. Unfortunately, none of this is helping sales.
Nintendo discusses the ace up its sleeve every so often but the company has refused to bite the bullet. Some call it the nuclear option. The idea is to release all previous Nintendo games, right up to the games for the Wii that preceded the Wii U, for free.
No company has a back catalog as huge as Nintendo. Most of these games are bringing the company zero income as people quickly transition to new games but they are all playable and many are still modern and fun.
The games could be rolled out online for download on demand and users could store the games locally. There is some evidence that Nintendo is planning something like this since the company began to promote a 2TB add-on hard disk for the Wii U system. Who needs that much capacity?
I have to assume there is a debate at Nintendo regarding the rollout of the entire catalog for free. Some executives are probably arguing all these free games will distract from the new Wii U-specific game purchases, meaning while the console sales may skyrocket, the cash cow games themselves will fail.

This sounds logical but in actuality users want new material and the old catalog as a novelty to satisfy their need to horde old games. If the user went broke tomorrow and could never afford another new game, he would have plenty of old games to play. This depression-set mentality is common during economic downturns, making this the perfect time for Nintendo to go for it and open the floodgates.
Nintendo is not in the same rat race as Microsoft and Sony. It's always maintained a separate channel as both a game console and a portable gaming company with the popular Nintendo DS. Thus it can experiment and evolve within a different realm.
Now is the time for the grand experiment. Give its customers thousands and thousands of dollars in value if they buy a Wii U. Free games for everyone!

Call of Duty: Ghosts executive producer teases 'squad' gameplay

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin tweeted a seven-second teaser featuring what appears to be an in-game menu for "squad" gameplay in its upcoming first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Ghosts.

The clip, posted above, lasts just long enough to show "online play" and "options" menus. Just before the video cuts out, "Squads" can also be seen at the top of the screen.

Rubin does not state what game the clip is from, though Infinity Ward announced earlier this week that it will unveil Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer component Aug. 14. The event takes place in Los Angeles, where Polygon will be reporting live. The show will also be livestreamed on the game's website and Xbox Live at 1:30 ET.

For more on the game, check out our in-depth story on Call of Duty: Ghosts from E3 2013. Call of Duty: Ghosts is currently slated for launch Nov. 5 for Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. Releases for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will follow.

Journey creators' next 'risky' game still years off

The next game from Journey, Flower and Flow creators thatgamecompany is still at least two years away, according to a New Yorker profile of creative director Jenova Chen, who offers new hints about his studio's currently unannounced project.

Chen describes the follow-up to Journey, which he calls a "risky" project bound for multiple platforms, as "the bastard child" of thatgamecompany's past games, touching on similar themes of "connection, nostalgia and self-reflection." According to The New Yorker's piece, Chen likened the goal for the game to impart that of a deeply held, emotionally resonant memory. Players will be able to experience the game solo or with others and, like Journey, will feature non-verbal communication.

Chen told Polygon earlier this year that he was shooting for something more financially successful with the successor to Journey — a project that bankrupted the developer — saying, "My resolution is to create a big financial success."

A quote from Chen about local multiplayer in The New Yorker sheds some light on those plans to appeal to a broader audience.

"A lot of people asked us why Journey didn't let them play with friends or family, and obviously we had a reason — because that would have defeated the purpose of the game," Chen said. "But for a game to be truly be accessible, to both children and adults and to men and women, it has to allow people to play with the ones they love."

Playground Games developing next-gen Forza, according to LinkedIn profile

PlayGround games is developing a "next-gen Forza project," according to the LinkedIn profile of an artist at the studio.

Yibo Liu's LinkedIn page disclosed that he was "Working as the only technical artist in the vehicle art team for an undisclosed next-gen Forza project." Liu, who lists his position as a technical artist at Playground, has since changed the listing to reference an "undisclosed Xbox One project."

Forza Motorsport 5 was the first game that Microsoft showed off when it revealed the Xbox One in late May. The racing simulation franchise received its first spinoff last year, Forza Horizon, which was developed by Playground Games. We've reached out to Microsoft for information on the alleged project and will update this article with more information as we receive it.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon that the company doesn't "comment on job postings or any speculation."

...."Recently, Nintendo has been promoting the fact the Wii U can handle up to 2TB of hard drive space on their Wii U console, even offering deals for actual 2TB drives at some stores, so rumors have started that Nintendo has an ace up their sleeve, that the the reason you will need all that space, is their going to offer up their whole library of older games from NES days to Wii all for FREE to Wii U owners!"....
